The 2019 coronavirus pandemic has erased much of the progress made in poverty reduction,
seeing that global extreme poverty began to rise in 2020 for the first time since the Asian crisis in
the late 1990s. Even before the onset of the pandemic, the world was not anywhere near
achieving the goal of eradicating poverty by 2030, so quick and significant action is needed.
Furthermore, the pandemic is likely to increase disparities in working poverty between genders
and age groups.
